iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Pro: What are the differences
Apple iPhone Premiere 15 series
In September 2023, Apple debuted its new products, some of which were smartphones from the 15th series. Something new and very significant for the environment was the new USB Type-C socket. According to statistics published by the European Commission through June 2022: a common charger and cable would save consumers approximately BGN 488 million and 1 million kg. of waste that is generated by incompatible chargers and cables. Apple announced in 2020 that they had a goal of being carbon neutral by 2030, or in other words, using 100% renewable electricity (which they had previously achieved two years earlier in 2018) and using 100% recycled materials. in their products, going at an excellent pace at the moment. For example, in the new series, all batteries use one hundred percent recycled cobalt. Other announced new improvements in the series were: a 48-megapixel camera, action button, processor, and titanium frame. In the following lines, we will examine the significant differences between the budget and professional models.
Difference in specifications
Although the two models are from the same series, they have a huge difference between them. iPhone 15 Pro is made of stronger and more durable materials, and has more additional features and some significant advantages for specific users, while the standard fifteen uses less durable materials, but again durable and has the most necessary functions, the purpose of the model being to be also more accessible to all its users.
Frame
Something new and innovative in this series is the new titanium case (Grade 5). It is used in Pro models, while the budget versions use the standard aluminum frame. Both materials are durable, but titanium is a significantly stronger material. Another significant feature is the weight of both models. 15 weighs 171 grams, while the professional version weighs only 16 grams more! Which is a big step forward compared to previous generations. Thanks to its new design and titanium case, the flagship 15 Pro is 9% lighter than previous flagship models. The difference is less than 20 grams, but it is significant for smartphones.
Display
Both phones have an OLED display with a high brightness of up to 2000 nits and a resolution of 2556 by 1179 pixels. The most significant difference in the displays is that at Pro version has Always On Display and the refresh rate can go up to 120 Hz. The faster refresh rate is a big plus for many games because it reduces control lag and speeds up responsiveness. In the budget version, we have a standard 60-hertz refresh that most users are used to. The downside of fast refresh is that it leads to higher power consumption, but Apple has taken care of that by building Pro Their Motion system, which controls refresh relative to content. For example, if you are reading a book - the refresh rate is 10 Hz, if you are playing a game, it is 120 Hz.
Processor
In this series, we witnessed comparable technological progress as the iPhone 15 was equipped with an A16 Bionic processor, while the Pro was upgraded with the new Apple A17 chipset Pro and 2GB of additional RAM. Significantly, the A17 chipset Pro demonstrates a significant improvement in performance metrics, boasting a GPU that is 20% more powerful and a CPU that is 10% faster than its A16 predecessor. This advance significantly increases the computing capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro, making it significantly more powerful. Another amazing improvement in the new chipset is its manufacturing which is 3nm or one nanometer less than the previous series. This improvement gives the professional version a significant advantage in calculations and better efficiency of the energy it uses.
iPhone 15 | iPhone 15 Pro | Difference
Chipset design | 4 nm | 3 nm | 1 nm |
CPU cores | 2x3.46 GHz 4x2.02 GHz | 2x3.78 GHz 4x2.11 GHz | 2x0,32 GHz 4x0,09 GHz |
RAM | 6GB | 8GB | 2GB |
CPU cores | 5 cores | 6 cores | 1 core |
Camera
Apple is world famous mainly for the cameras of their smartphones. Most of their users say that the level of detail, quality, and colors of iPhone photos are many times better than competing brands. This is also one of the reasons why Apple has not budged from the top 3 worldwide in terms of smartphone market share in recent years. When we talk about the cameras, we can start with the similarities between the two models of the fifteenth series. Both models have 12MP front cameras, 48MP rear cameras, and 12MP ultra-wide rear sensors, megapixel wise they are the same but have slight differences but we won't go into depth and detail them this time. The differences we will find in Pro are an additional telephoto rear camera for more distant photos (up to 3x zoom), and an additional depth sensor on the back, which helps when shooting in darker hours or locations. It may seem small, but these extra sensors help make the photos much better.
Type-C jack
Apple left their legendary Lightning cable in history and moved forward by integrating a new socket on all their phones, which has been standard for all other smartphone manufacturers for several years. The fifteenth series models use the USB Type-C socket. The standard fifteen has USB-C version 2, which supports fast charging and data transfer up to 480 megabits per second, which is the same speed that the Lightning socket reached. On the iPhone 15 Pro, it has USB Type-C version 3, which supports transfer speeds of up to 10 gigabits (10000 megabits). This is an improvement in data transfer speed of 1983% or almost 20 times faster. We also attach a table with the significant differences in the bushings between the two models:
iPhone 15 | iPhone 15 Pro | Difference
USB standard | USB Type-C 2.0 | USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2
Year of USB | 2000 | 2013 | 13 years |
Charging power | up to 20W | up to 20W
Data transfer in Mbps | 480 Mbps | 10000 Mbps | 9520 Mbps |
Data transfer in MB/s | 60MB/s | 1250MB/s | 1190 MB/s |
Battery
An interesting fact in the characteristics is that the budget Petnaisk has a larger battery capacity than the Pro version. The difference is 75 milliamps in favor of the iPhone 15, which has a 3349 mAh battery. This advantage is relatively small and not so significant compared to the battery of the Pro version, whose capacity reaches 3274 milliamps. Given the optimized operating system and the difference in all components - this advantage is not great at all. According to the manufacturer's specifications, the batteries of both phones should last approximately:
iPhone 15 | iPhone 15 Pro | Difference
Video (playback) | up to 20 hours | up to 23 hours | 3 hours |
Video (streaming) | up to 16 hours | up to 20 hours | 4 hours |
Audio (playback) | up to 80 hours | up to 75 hours | 5 hours |
Colors
In this series, we have a lot of similarities in the back panels of the phones. The previous series had a big difference in the panels, as the standard models had a glossy finish that got fingerprints and fine scratches very easily, while the more professional ones had a matte finish that didn't get fingerprints and scratches very easily. In the fifteenth series, both models have frosted rear windows, but use different procedures. The standard model uses a Color-infused glass back and comes in five more sparkling colors, while the higher series uses a Textured matte glass back and comes in more selected premium colors.
Buttons
In 2007, Apple announced their first smartphone that had an additional mute button/switch. The button in question is the Mute Switch, which is used in all iPhones up to and including the 14th series and was a proprietary feature of the company. In the 15th series, we have a division between budget and professional models. The standard model and its larger Plus counterpart use the legendary Mute Switch, and the more innovative new “action button” is integrated only in the professional models Pro and Max. With the new button, you can do almost anything you want. For example: mute the sound again, turn on the flash, launch the camera, or use a shortcut and create your template for the button to work on.
Which is the better model
There are various factors by which we can choose the better model. By characteristics, the iPhone 15 Pro has more advantages and is the better model, but all this comes at the expense of its price, which is significantly higher than the standard model. The more budget model is again a new model with a guaranteed long software update, again it has a fast processor and good rear cameras, it is suitable for everyone and can be said to be the more amateur version. If gaming or video editing is your hobby, then you should go for the more professional series!
