What's new in iPhone 18 Pro?
On September 9, 2026, at 8:00 PM Bulgarian time, Apple held its highly anticipated presentation, during which the company introduced the new iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone – the iPhone Duo. While the Duo marks the beginning of an entirely new product category for Apple, the Pro models build upon the familiar formula with a more powerful processor, improved cooling, record-breaking battery life, and the most advanced camera system ever featured in an iPhone.
The new generation is not simply about higher numbers. Apple has focused on the features people use every day – photo quality, low-light performance, battery life, and sustained performance during demanding tasks. The biggest change is the new 48 MP main camera with a variable aperture, which provides greater control over light and depth of field.

What Are the New Pro Models?
Once again, Apple offers its professional models in two different sizes. The main differences between them are the display size, physical dimensions, weight, and battery life.
iPhone 18 Pro is the more compact model, featuring a 6.3-inch display, the complete Pro camera system, and the new A20 Pro processor;
iPhone 18 Pro Max offers the same performance and camera system but comes with a larger 6.9-inch display and the best battery life ever offered by an iPhone.
Both models are available with 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB of internal storage. This is good news for users who record a lot of high-resolution video, work with ProRAW and ProRes files, or simply want to keep their phone for longer without worrying about available storage.
A Familiar Design with Carefully Selected Improvements
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max retain the durable aluminum unibody construction introduced with the previous generation. The enclosure is made from a single piece of aluminum, improving both the strength of the phone and the transfer of heat away from the processor.
The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, while Ceramic Shield also covers the back of the device. According to Apple, the front glass offers three times better scratch resistance compared with iPhone 16 Pro. The models also retain their IP68 protection against water and dust, allowing them to withstand submersion at a depth of up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.
The new colors are:
Black – a classic black finish;
Silver – a clean silver finish;
Glacier – a bright color with a cool tone;
Burgundy – an entirely new, deep burgundy finish.

The wide camera plateau remains one of the most recognizable elements of the design. It houses the three rear cameras, flash, microphone, and LiDAR Scanner. The Camera Control button has also been retained, providing quick access to the camera, photo and video capture, and settings such as zoom, exposure, and Photographic Styles.
Dimensions and Weight
iPhone 18 Pro measures 150 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm and weighs 211 grams;
iPhone 18 Pro Max measures 163.4 x 78 x 8.75 mm and weighs 249 grams.
The smaller model is more comfortable to use with one hand, while the Pro Max is intended for people who prefer a larger screen for videos, games, photography, and work. Its weight of 249 grams makes the Pro Max noticeably heavier, but the additional internal space has been used for a significantly larger battery.
Display with a Smaller Dynamic Island
iPhone 18 Pro features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2622 x 1206 pixels. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display with a resolution of 2868 x 1320 pixels. Both panels offer a pixel density of 460 pixels per inch.
ProMotion technology automatically adjusts the refresh rate up to 120 Hz according to the content displayed on the screen. This provides smoother scrolling and a better gaming experience without wasting battery power when a high refresh rate is unnecessary. The Always-On display allows the clock, notifications, and important widgets to remain visible even when the phone is locked.
Peak outdoor brightness reaches 3,000 nits, helping the display remain readable even in strong sunlight. An anti-reflective coating has also been added to reduce distracting reflections.
Dynamic Island is now smaller and can display up to three Live Activities simultaneously. This makes it possible to follow navigation, music, and a live sports score in one place without constantly switching between applications.
A20 Pro – More Power and Better Cooling
At the heart of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is the new A20 Pro. The processor features a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing is also supported, providing more realistic lighting and reflections in compatible games.

Apple has introduced a new method of positioning the processor and memory, inspired by the chips used in Mac computers. This allows heat to be transferred away more quickly and improves performance during prolonged workloads. Memory bandwidth has been increased by 50%, helping with video editing, demanding games, and AI tasks.
The new vapor-chamber cooling system has three times the surface area of the previous generation. Combined with the aluminum enclosure, it distributes heat more evenly and allows the A20 Pro to maintain high performance for longer. According to Apple, graphics performance can be up to 40% faster, while sustained performance can also be up to 40% better compared with iPhone 17 Pro.
This improvement will be most noticeable during gaming, 4K video editing, and the use of more complex AI models directly on the phone. Instead of reducing its speed after several minutes under heavy load, the new cooling system should allow the device to maintain stable performance for a longer period.

New 48 MP Camera with Variable Aperture
The camera is where iPhone 18 Pro makes its most significant step forward. All three rear cameras once again have a resolution of 48 MP, but the main Fusion camera now features a physical variable aperture.

Previous iPhone models used a fixed aperture, while the new model can operate at four different aperture settings:
ƒ/1.48 allows the maximum amount of light to reach the sensor and is suitable for night and indoor scenes;
ƒ/1.8 provides balanced performance for everyday photography;
ƒ/2.8 provides greater depth of field and keeps more background details in focus;
ƒ/4.0 is suitable for photographs where maximum depth and greater creative control are required.
The phone can automatically select the appropriate setting according to the available light and the scene. More advanced users can control the aperture manually, together with shutter speed, white balance, and other professional settings. A histogram can also be displayed directly in the Camera application.
At its widest ƒ/1.48 aperture, the main camera offers approximately 50% better low-light performance. This means brighter night photographs, lower noise levels, and faster capture in Night mode.
Three 48 MP Rear Cameras
48 MP Fusion Main – a 24 mm main camera with variable aperture, second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and support for 24 MP or 48 MP photographs;
48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide – a 13 mm camera with a 120-degree field of view, suitable for landscapes, group photographs, and macro photography;
48 MP Fusion Telephoto – a 100 mm telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom, a tetraprism design, and 3D sensor-shift stabilization.
The telephoto camera also provides 8x optical-quality zoom, equivalent to a focal length of 200 mm. The total optical-quality zoom range reaches 16x, while digital zoom extends up to 40x. This provides significantly greater freedom when photographing distant subjects, sporting events, nature, and detailed portraits.
The new Photographic Styles 3 allow users to adjust not only the colors and tones but also the texture and grain of a photograph. The effects can be modified or removed after the image has been captured. Improved Smart Focus Tracking follows a moving subject and maintains focus even if it briefly leaves and then reenters the frame.
18 MP Center Stage Front Camera
The front camera has a resolution of 18 MP and supports Center Stage. It recognizes the people in the frame and automatically adjusts the composition to include more participants. A landscape photograph can be captured without physically rotating the phone.
Dual Capture is also supported, allowing simultaneous recording with the front and rear cameras. The feature is suitable for travel videos, interviews, reactions, and social media content in which both the user and the scene in front of them need to be captured at the same time.
Professional Video Capabilities
iPhone 18 Pro continues to target professional video creators. The models support 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames per second, ProRes RAW, and Apple Log 2 for more precise color grading.
Cinematic mode now allows certain effects and depth adjustments to be applied to regular video after it has been recorded. The improved Audio Mix can separate music and voices from unwanted background noise, while four studio-quality microphones provide clearer and more immersive audio.
In low-light conditions, the phone automatically adjusts its aperture and frame rate to capture brighter and clearer footage. Support for 4K time-lapse video with Dolby Vision HDR has also been added.
The Best Battery Life in an iPhone So Far
The battery improvements are particularly noticeable in the larger model. iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 24 hours of typical use and up to 36 hours of video playback. With iPhone 18 Pro Max, these figures increase to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of video playback.
This represents up to six additional hours of video playback compared with iPhone 17 Pro Max, making the new Max the model with the best battery life in the history of iPhone.
Faster wired charging allows the battery to reach up to 50% in approximately 15 minutes when using a compatible 60 W or higher power adapter. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25 W are also supported.
iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and the New Siri AI
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arrive with iOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence. The new Siri AI is more conversational and can use the user’s personal context to find information in messages, emails, photographs, and notes.

The assistant can understand the content displayed on the screen and perform actions within applications according to the current task. Siri AI can also answer more complex questions, assist with writing, create initial drafts, and adapt to the way the user normally writes.
Some of the new AI capabilities are initially available in a limited number of languages. Siri AI launches as a beta in English, with support for additional languages being added gradually. As a result, not every feature will be immediately available to users in all countries and regions.
iPhone Duo – The Beginning of a New Category
Alongside the Pro models, Apple also introduced iPhone Duo – the first foldable iPhone. The device features an outer display and a large 7.6-inch inner display that unfolds in a similar way to a small tablet. The model uses a titanium frame and hinge, an A20 Pro processor, a dual-battery system, and a dual 48 MP camera system.
iPhone Duo represents one of the biggest design changes in the history of iPhone and deserves to be examined separately. In our next article, we will take a closer look at its displays, foldable construction, cameras, and new options for using two applications simultaneously.
When Will iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Be Released?
Pre-orders for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max begin on September 12, 2026, while official sales start on September 18. Both models are available with 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB of storage.
Is iPhone 18 Pro Worth It?
iPhone 18 Pro does not completely change the appearance of the phone, but it delivers substantial improvements in the areas that matter most during everyday use. The variable aperture provides a real advantage when capturing photographs and videos, the A20 Pro delivers more power for gaming and AI tasks, and the new cooling system helps maintain that performance for longer.
For iPhone 17 Pro owners, upgrading to the new model will be most attractive because of the camera, battery life, and improved cooling. For users of an older iPhone, the difference will be significantly more noticeable – from the brightness and smoothness of the display to photo quality, speed, and battery life.
iPhone 18 Pro is suitable for people who want all the professional features in a relatively compact size. iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better choice for those who value a larger display and maximum battery life.
